What the original app told people in May 2021

Carried over from the 2021 "More information" page, which summarized the CDC at the time. Kept as a snapshot of what was known then, not current medical advice.

The vaccines

  • Pfizer-BioNTech: 2 shots for full effectiveness
  • Moderna: 2 shots for full effectiveness
  • Johnson & Johnson: 1 shot for full effectiveness
  • Eligibility: 12 and older, Pfizer-BioNTech only

Known then

  • Effective in preventing death and severe illness
  • Fully protected 2 weeks after the final shot
  • No vaccine is 100% effective

Not known yet

  • How effective they are against variants
  • How effective they are for people with weakened immune systems
  • How long protection lasts

The data above answers the first question: the Omicron wave of winter 2021–22 brought the highest case counts of the pandemic, even after most people were vaccinated.
